One of our team, Ella, has spent the last year researching and writing a book on the realities of reporting rape in the criminal justice system after her personal experience. Part memoir, part analysis of the judicial system and wider society, she explores why we have such a low conviction rate for rape against record levels of reports.
Synopsis:
Ella wasn’t supposed to write a book about a victim’s perspective of reporting rape within Britain’s criminal justice system but then she wasn’t supposed to be raped by her boss, a man she mistakenly believed cared about her, either so I guess you could say she’s trying to make the best of a life-changing situation.
When she reported her rape to police, she was told there was nothing they could do and it was then she began to both receive and seek an education into just how broken the criminal justice system is around sexual offences and the difficulties victims face.
Ella wrote this book for three very specific groups of people: herself to try and understand the judicial system around sexual offences; other victims, to help them make sense of their experiences; and those in the judiciary to appreciate why so few offenders are convicted.
What you’re about to read is Ella’s journey of understanding trauma; why the morality of #MeToo is not yet for the masses; the logistical and emotional realities of what it means to report a rape and why, in modern Britain, we have one of the lowest conviction rates for rape in the Western world.
